Mercedes-AMG has unveiled significantly updated versions of the GLE 63 S 4MATIC and GLS 63 4MATIC, further enhancing the performance capabilities of its SUV portfolio.
The two top-of-the-line models combine the characteristic power of a V8 with state-of-the-art technology, exclusive design, and a particularly broad balance between sportiness, comfort, and everyday practicality.
At the heart of both models lies the thoroughly updated AMG M177 EVO engine.
The 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine perfectly embodies the Mercedes-AMG performance DNA.
A series of fundamental engineering modifications marks a decisive step in securing the future of this iconic powertrain, ensuring it meets future regulations while continuing to deliver exceptional performance.
Engine updates include a flat-plane crankshaft, a modified intake camshaft, an optimized fuel injection system, and a state-of-the-art exhaust aftertreatment system.
Like its predecessor, the M177 EVO is manufactured in Affalterbach in accordance with the “One Man, One Engine” philosophy.
With the M177 EVO version featured in the new GLE 63 S 4MATIC and GLS 63 4MATIC, AMG is laying the foundation for a new generation of V8 engines that will be both more powerful and more efficient, while remaining compliant with international standards.
The key to this balance is a new flat-plane crankshaft: it reduces rotational mass, improves the engine’s acceleration, and ensures exceptionally precise response.
With an output of 450 kW (612 k.s.), the M177 EVO delivers the same power as its predecessor.
Its maximum torque of 850 Nm is available across a wide engine speed range from 2,500 to 4,500 rpm.
Thanks to a state-of-the-art exhaust gas aftertreatment system, including a particulate filter that comes standard worldwide, it also meets the latest emissions standards.
Further technical modifications include an optimized fuel injection system, new intake and exhaust ports, an updated intake camshaft, as well as improvements to the compressor wheel and turbocharger housing.
These measures are also aimed at optimizing throttle response, improving efficiency, and harmonizing power delivery.
The extensive updates to the M177 EVO are complemented by mild-hybrid technology featuring an Integrated Starter-Generator (ISG) 2.0 and an additional 48-volt electrical system.
The ISG provides an additional 17 kW (23 k.s.) and 205 Nm of torque, supporting power delivery.
It also delivers additional torque at low RPMs, enables energy recovery during braking, and facilitates smooth engine restarts.
Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds (GLE 63 S 4MATIC) and 4.2 seconds (GLS 63 4MATIC), as well as a top speed of 280 km/h, underscore the power of both models.
New AMG Performance Exhaust System The AMG Performance exhaust system has also been newly developed.
It has a decisive influence on the acoustic character of the V8 and underscores the emotional appeal of the GLE 63 S 4MATIC and GLS 63 4MATIC.
Thanks to standard exhaust valve control, the sound can be adjusted—from a subdued tone in Comfort mode to a more dynamic expression in Sport mode.
The exhaust valve allows the sound to be adapted to the current driving situation.
It can be controlled either via the selected driving modes or via a button on the center control panel of the center console.
In this way, the sound profile can be precisely tuned to achieve the desired balance between restraint and emotional presence.
An emotional performance design with the unmistakable AMG look The new performance design gives the GLE 63 S 4MATIC and GLS 63 4MATIC even greater presence and status.
The completely redesigned front end, featuring the signature AMG radiator grille, enlarged air intakes for efficient cooling of the powerful V8 engine, and exclusive LED lighting with the distinctive AMG light signature, underscores the striking appearance of both high-performance SUVs.
The rear view is defined by the striking twin tailpipes of the AMG Performance exhaust system.
The distinctive diffuser design in the rear bumper area further emphasizes the dynamic, performance-oriented look and makes a clear AMG statement.
Sporty, comfortable, and off-road capable all in one: the AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension.
Perfect handling thanks to active roll stabilization: AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL Both models come standard with the AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL active roll stabilization system.
It significantly reduces body roll in corners and contributes to exceptionally stable and precise handling in this SUV segment.
The suspension and steering respond with high precision to the prevailing driving conditions and road surface.
To achieve this, active electromechanical stabilizers with AMG-specific control are installed on both axles.
Sensors analyze driving maneuvers and road surface conditions up to 1,000 times per second.
Based on this data, body movements are compensated for instantly and with the highest precision.
When cornering, as well as when driving on a road that is damaged on one side, the AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL system minimizes body roll.
This compensatory stabilization also has a positive effect when driving off-road.
The all-new ESP® system offers even more precise control strategies for maximum driving pleasure.
The AMG Performance 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive system with fully variable torque distribution ensures optimal traction under all conditions.
To withstand the high torque of the M177 EVO engine, the drive shafts on the front and rear axles were specially developed.
They guarantee maximum durability even under extreme conditions.
AMG Rear-Axle Differential Lock: Intelligent Power Distribution for Maximum Driving Dynamics Combined with the standard electronically controlled AMG rear-axle differential lock, these sport utility vehicles respond even more nimbly—for even greater driving pleasure.
When cornering, the locking differential optimally distributes power between the two rear wheels.
It constantly adapts to the driving situation and, for example, improves stability when changing lanes.
In this way, it reduces wheel spin on the inside wheel without any braking intervention—so there is no loss of power.
In the event of a speed difference between the driven wheels, more torque is transferred to the wheel with better traction to reduce wheel spin.
The limited-slip differential also improves traction and stability in all driving situations—from starting and accelerating to dynamic cornering and braking—as well as in challenging conditions such as snow.
When maneuvering or in city traffic, it offers greater comfort compared to a mechanical limited-slip differential.
Interventions are tailored to the driving situation and the ESP® mode.
In this way, the limited-slip differential broadens the balance between driving dynamics, comfort, handling, and driving safety.
AMG DYNAMIC SELECT: A Wide Range of Vehicle Characteristics Using the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving modes, the driver can influence the overall driving character of the GLE 63 S 4MATIC and GLS 63 4MATIC.
“Comfort”: Focused on a comfortable overall setup with particularly smooth gear shifts and responsive steering.
“Sport” and “Sport+”: Allow for a gradual increase in dynamism.
The 9G transmission operates with shorter shift times.
In addition, the throttle blip function is activated; together with controlled ignition cuts, this creates a sporty, exhilarating driving experience and sound signature.
The suspension and steering are tuned to be stiffer, and throttle response is more direct.
“Slippery” and “Slippery”: Optimal off-road capability and ideal traction on icy or snow-covered roads.
Smooth gear shifts and a gentle throttle response reduce engine power according to the type of surface and speed.
“Individual”: All settings can be customized to suit your personal preferences.
