Audis new RS5 consolidation adds batteries and drift mode despite big weight
Audi has consolidated the RS4 and RS5 into a single new RS5 that pairs a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 with a transmission-mounted electric motor for a stated 630 hp and 608 lb-ft system output.
Audi says the design tucks about 22 kWh of battery capacity under the trunk floor to enable roughly 50 miles of electric range and supports an RS Torque Rear mode for controlled oversteer.
The car offers optional carbon-ceramic brakes and an RS Sport package to tune performance.
The notable consequence is a substantial curb-weight increase—Audi lists weights above 5,100 lb—which alters agility and track behavior despite Dynamic Torque Control.
For buyers and fleet managers, electrification changes maintenance, insurance and performance expectations.
The update matters because it shows Audi Sport prioritizing electrified power and torque management over traditional light-weighting.
